A ritual product is held to a higher standard than a daily one, because the daily ones get used out of routine — even when they are merely fine. A ritual product gets used only when it’s good enough to look forward to. That’s a different bar.

The Glass Skin Mask went through six formulations before it shipped. The first three felt nice in the jar but didn’t move the corneometer reading. The fourth moved the reading but stung on reactive skin. The fifth was the one — and the sixth was the one we shipped after a hundred-person consumer panel.

The Rose Otto Treatment Oil is the only Vellum product with a deliberate scent. We added it because customers asked. The Bulgarian rose is held at 0.05% — below the dermal sensitivity threshold — and a fragrance-free version is available on request. We’d rather make both than compromise either.

What goes in a ritual product vs. a daily one?
Daily products earn their place by being wearable twice a day, every day. Ritual products earn their place by being good enough that you look forward to using them once or twice a week. The Glass Skin Mask is a 20-minute reset. The Enzyme Resurfacing Mask is a 10-minute texture refinement. The Rose Otto Treatment Oil is the soft glow finish over an evening moisturizer. The Barrier Mist is the in-between layer when the skin needs a hand. Each one is optional — and that’s the point.
How often should I use the masks?
Glass Skin Mask: once a week is the standard, twice a week is safe through retinoid season or winter dryness. Enzyme Resurfacing Mask: once a week, max — the papain plus lactic combination is more active than it feels, and weekly is the sweet spot for most skin types. Never use both masks the same night; alternate weeks or rotate them through the month.
Is the Rose Otto Treatment Oil safe with retinaldehyde?
Yes — and it’s one of the most popular pairings on the actives shelf. Use the Retinaldehyde 0.3% first, let it fully absorb (60–90 seconds), then layer the Rose Otto oil as the last evening step. The oil’s squalane base supports the barrier disturbed by the retinoid conversion, and the bakuchiol adds a non-photosensitizing collagen layer. We do recommend skipping the oil on the same nights as the AHA pad — three actives is one too many.
What’s the difference between the Essentials Set and the Actives Set?
The Essentials Set is the four-step daily routine: cleanser, niacinamide serum, light moisturizer, mineral SPF. Recommended as the starter for combo and oily skin. The Actives Set is the three-piece treatment box: retinaldehyde, tranexamic, and the Glass Skin Mask. Recommended as the 60-day reset for skin that’s ready for targeted work on tone, texture, and fine lines. Most customers begin with the Essentials and add the Actives at month two.
Is the Barrier Mist Toner an actual functional product or a vibe?
Functional. It’s a humectant layer — glycerin at 8%, oat-derived beta-glucan, pro-vitamin B5 — designed to slot between serum and moisturizer to give the cream a damp surface to seal in. Most users feel the difference immediately. It’s also one of the only Vellum products you can use mid-day without disturbing makeup; a single spray from twelve inches away refreshes the surface without breaking the foundation.
